Intellectual property specialists James & Wells are excited to team up with Technology Investment Network (TIN) to support New Zealand’s burgeoning technology sector.

Best known for its flagship annual publication, the TIN Report, Technology Investment Network is the leading source of information on the New Zealand tech sector, which is now the country’s third largest source of export earnings behind dairy and tourism.

In its 14th year, the TIN report monitors, measures and ranks globally-focused Kiwi technology companies to quantify and provide insight to the economic significance of their innovation and export activity.

Encompassing the global success stories of companies as diverse as Magic Memories, PushPay, RocketLab, Datacom, Xero and others, it’s clear that Kiwi innovation and ingenuity is alive and thriving in the tech world.

In 2017, the sector hit a new milestone, with the top 200 TIN companies generating a combined $10bn in annual sales, $7.3bn of which came from exports.  This represented an uplift of almost 8% on 2016 revenues, a trend that’s expected to continue.

It’s against this exciting backdrop that James & Wells have come on board as a new partner of TIN.  With offices in Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton and Tauranga, James & Wells see the partnership with TIN as a great opportunity to show their continuing commitment and support to innovative New Zealand businesses.

Partner Jonathan Lucas said, “We know from global research that over 80% of a company’s value can be attributed to its intangible assets, and this is particularly relevant to tech-based enterprises. As long-term champions of innovation, we see our role to help educate and guide New Zealand businesses on how to leverage their intellectual assets for commercial success both locally and internationally.  Teaming up with the TIN community provides a perfect platform for us to raise awareness of the growing importance of IP in this sector.”

TIN founder and Managing Director, Greg Shanahan, said “There’s no doubt that growth in the New Zealand tech sector is in large part being driven by corresponding growth in R&D, innovation and intellectual property.  It’s a great pleasure to welcome IP experts James & Wells to the sponsorship family of TIN.  James & Wells have a proven track record in supporting businesses across all sectors of the New Zealand economy, especially exporters.  Their involvement is a great fit for the TIN community.  We’re looking forward to working alongside them.’
