James & Wells have teamed up with Kate Wilson to expand their intellectual property advisory services.
Kate Wilson is a former founding partner of James & Wells where she became established as an internationally acclaimed IP strategy advisor, working with many of New Zealand’s iconic and innovative organisations. Since stepping down from the James & Wells partnership in 2015, Wilson has established several businesses, been appointed to a number of corporate boards and established a thriving IP strategy practice.
Wilson and James & Wells have now again joined forces and Wilson will provide strategic IP and business advice as a consultant. With Wilson’s expertise and reputation as a renowned IP strategist, James & Wells’ IP advisory team gains a leading light to further enhance their cutting-edge advice.
James & Wells partner Jonathan Lucas says: “We are excited and delighted to have Kate working with us again. She needs no introduction in terms of what she offers clients seeking to maximise the commercial potential of their IP. Kate’s insights and energy are highly regarded by clients that want clarity and guidance on how they can use IP intelligently.”
Wilson says: “A significant part of my career at James & Wells involved helping clients and the wider business and research communities understand, secure, and leverage their IP rights. Being able to extend the strategic IP services I have provided in my own consultancy by being part of the James & Wells team again feels wonderful, It has also been fantastic to re-connect with old colleagues and friends.”
Using IP strategically should be at the top of every company’s to-do list, and on the board’s agenda, at any time. However, Wilson points out that the current uncertain economic situation means businesses need to think smarter than ever: “Not only will business owners need to think more strategically, they will also be compelled to think creatively, as traditional business models become less relevant and other markets should be considered.”
A university-qualified physicist and chemist, Wilson’s IP career has given her experience across an array of technologies and industries, and all types of intangible asset considerations are incorporated into her recommendations. As an example, one of her less conventional strategies was advising in relation to a Netflix series. In her advice, Wilson likes to think creatively and is comfortable with using her real-world business experience to challenge established practices to help clients achieve their goals.
Earlier this week Wilson was inducted into The New Zealand Hall of Fame for Women Entrepreneurs. The Hall of Fame recognises trailblazers who have had a significant impact on local and global economies and generously shared their wisdom and resources with others.
Wilson is based in Hamilton but works with clients all over New Zealand and internationally.
