About Jason

As Head of the James & Wells Life Sciences team, and with over twenty-five years’ industry experience, Jason’s expertise includes a diverse array of biotechnology fields.

Jason’s focus is on high-end intellectual property strategies for patent, design and copyright rights. He specialises in patent drafting and prosecution, intellectual property due diligence, intellectual property infringement advice, and intellectual property commercialisation.

Jason’s background gives him an understanding of his client’s technology and how it can be captured, protected and exploited to realise the true value of a client’s business. Jason has co-invented two inventions relating to nutritionally balanced food and beverage products. These inventions have been granted four patents in New Zealand and Australia.

In his work on the Arrow Pharmaceuticals (NZ) Limited v Sanofi-Aventis case, Jason successfully obtained the first Declaration of Non-Infringement of a patent from the High Court of New Zealand.

Outside of the office Jason loves the outdoors. He enjoys jet skiing, fishing, golfing and hiking.

Experience

Jason has been exposed to a large range of technologies specifically in the fields of chemical & life sciences, software and mechanical engineering.

Jason has been a director of several successful start-up companies including Freeload, a company manufacturing and marketing an innovative bike rack and attachment system it had developed. He was also a Director of Kiwijoe New Zealand Limited, an intellectual property holding company which owned the intellectual property behind the Freeload bike rack products. Kiwijoe’s IP portfolio was sold to Thule in 2011.

Jason is listed as a leading lawyer in the 2018 edition of Asia IP Experts for pharma and biotech, and is ranked among the world’s top 300 patent strategists by influential publication Intellectual Asset Managements.

Jason served for five years on the Examination Board of the New Zealand Institute of Patents Attorneys and oversaw the Foreign Law; Drafting Parent Specifications and; Interpretation and Criticism papers.
